Rituals
Issue 03 gathers around one idea: that the smallest repetitions are the ones that quietly hold a life in place. Through photography, poetry, and personal essays, Rituals moves between intimacy and landscape, from the deeply private to the wildly shared.
Victor and his Wife tend to their garden in Vinales, Cuba, moving through their land the way their family has for generations, the knowledge passed quietly from hand to hand. A dippy egg is made precisely, and broken over a soldier every morning. The palm of a hand smooths out the wrinkles of a summer cloth that covers the outside table that has remained lonely since September. Vermont field hosts a sharing of wine and food. Peak harvests, with tomatoes so red they remind us of last august, reminding us that the waiting and tending, is what makes a routine worth staying disciplined with. The elders that kiss our heads as they pass over the same bowls that hold hearty dishes, as we spend another cold evening with our grandparents, wrapped in the same warmth and recipe they have offered us since infants. Old boots on grass. Hands holding fruit. At the end of the long day, the same chair to sit in, take a deep breath and soak in the acts of a cared for, whole life.
At the heart, and start, of it all: There are flour-dusted mornings and a bread baker's devotion. Portrait of a Baker, the ultimate meditation on repetition, early rising, and the quiet grace of a craft practiced before the world wakes up.
Made to be held, felt and returned to.
